In 2005,
Alberta Slim died in Surrey, B.C. Born Eric Edwards in England in 1910, he moved with his parents to an Alberta farm near Lloydminster at the age of 10. His yodelling cowboy singing career really took off when he joined
CKCK Regina in 1937. He had a daily radio show where he performed for no pay cheque, but was allowed to advertise his personal appearances and dances across the province. He also made a lot of money selling postcards of himself. He moved to Saskatoon in 1940 and repeated the same setup at
CFQC. He also met the love of his life, Pearl, a local girl who became his wife. Then back to Regina in 1945, but at
CKRM. Then it was off to Vancouver and
CKNW with a 15 minute morning segment and as one of the entertainers on
Ranger's Cabin. He was there from 1947 to 1952.
In 2007, the
CBC televised its last
Grey Cup broadcast, having aired its first exactly one day less than 55 years earlier. TSN had previously signed a five year exclusive "broadcast partnership" with the CFL scheduled to begin in 2008. CTV had to sell Sportsnet in order to acquire TSN.
