Dan Sys has passed away at age 72

Postby radiofan » Mon Oct 14, 2024 4:43 pm

Sorry to report that my longtime (55 years) friend and radio historian Dan Sys passed away early this morning after a long battle with cancer.

Dan has been a Radio West contributor since day one, ran his Canadian Radio News FB page for many years until he gave up on FB and moved the CRN material to Radio West.

In addition to being on top of anything radio, Dan was also an avid collector of radio station promo material for almost 60 years.

Glad we were able to get together for one last lunch in Abbotsford recently.

You put up a helluva fight for years, and now the pain is gone.

You and your contributions will be missed.

Thank you for being a friend!

Condolences to Desi, his family and all your friends.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Ted, so sorry to hear of Dan's passing. I will never forget the day you two walked into my hospital room here for a surprise visit during my months-long stay in 2015!
Condolences my friend.

Dan and I worked closely on a lot of broadcasting matters and mysteries. Near the end of the month, I would send him all the ISED changes that he would compile with his many findings to produce his monthly summary that he would send to many of us. The report was also featured in CIDX Messenger. I often felt he was my partner in crime!
Dan also compiled market profiles for different Canadian cities where in he would display each station with their logo in a grid. He also had a wealth of stickers and other radio memorabilia that he would post.
With his death goes an abundance of radio knowledge and history. It's a big loss for the radio monitoring community.

This is beyond sad.
I met Dan once but we corresponded for many years sharing in the hobby.
He was a truly wonderful friend and I along with many others will miss him deeply.
I hope there is good DX where you went to good friend.
Condolences to his family and many friends.

He will be missed.

Like many reading this I never had any interaction with Dan but I admired him for his knowledge and his desire to share his passion for radio.

I also have to admire him for still being engaged and productive as the end approached. I think most would have faded away at some point, and that he didn't speaks volumes to his character.

73s.

I would like to extend my condolences and respect from this side of the Pond. Dan was the authoritative voice of the Canadian broadcast scene. I corresponded with him directly a few times, and I can't say that I knew him other than virtually, but the news of his death was something of a shock, although I knew he had health problems from the period in 2020 when he was unable to produce CRN.

As North American News Editor for Medium Wave Circle here in the UK, I shall write a short obituary in the next edition of Medium Wave News.

At times like these, it is appropriate for the family to know how well Dan was appreciated around the world. I do hope (and suggest) that the tributes mentioned here be passed on to his loved ones.

RIP Dan.

We all live in this same small pond, and some folks leave behind bigger ripples than others.
