Broadcast History - July 10

It is a quiet day in history in Western Canadian radio today, so we look elsewhere in the world.

In 2001, two months and one day before 9/11, the System Administration Networking and Security (SANS) Institute announced that it was recruiting ham radio operators to create an emergency communications network for use by disaster relief personnel should the Internet and telecommunications systems suffer a catastrophic failure. You can read the details in the CNN article: ... index.html

In 2006, if you thought the only thing Yorkshire was Pudding, you'd be proven wrong. Yorkshire Radio debuted on this day, owned by Leeds United AFC (Soccer team). It broadcasts digitally only, on England's DAB channel 12A. Most programming is also carried on the Internet and, beginning on July 31, 2006, Sky Digital. Leeds United games are only carried on DAB.
