not a huge fan of gov't sticking nose in business but maybe some new media concentration rules might be a good thing afterall.

So sounds like Bell getting out of a lot of the sports biz. Probably would have happened with last weeks layoffs but had some Super Bowl commitments. As for 1040 I am surprised they kept it around for as long as they did when you consider the abysmal ratings and labour intensive operation.

Probably going to be a challenge for many of these folks landing elsewhere as Rogers isnt exactly in hiring mode. It will be interesting what format the station will change to.

In fairness, format changes are not new to any type of radio local or national.

Seems more than likely that Bell is launching a national news/talk brand.

From the TSN 1040 Website:

We have some news to share today about changes to our programming. CKST 1040 AM will no longer be a sports talk radio station.

It was a difficult decision, but the realities of the quickly evolving broadcast media landscape in Canada have made this change unavoidable.

We want to thank our on-air personalities, advertising partners and sponsors, and everyone who has contributed to this station. But especially we want to thank our listeners. Our work here at TSN 1040 was driven by our passion to bring you the very best sports, news and discussion. We sincerely appreciate the time you have spent with us.

You can continue to find TSN sports content on the iHeartRadio Canada platform and on TSN, TSN.ca, and the TSN App.

Thank you again for your loyalty over the years.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

From the CityNews article In Vancouver, the morning show cut away during a commercial break Tuesday before it was announced that the station would be “reprogrammed” as of Friday. The news was followed by Green Day’s “Good Riddance” before the airwaves turned to music (from Milkman's site) ...Any guess what the new format might be?

New format will probably be some form of talk.

Music would be a tough sell at best... they could try to revive the "smooth & easy" that CISL had, or bring back the "Coast 1040" name... don't hold your breath!

As for Winnipeg, CFRW could go back to Oldies, although I doubt it. Manitoba has never had a Classic Country format. I for one would not place a bet on any music returning.

FUNNY 1040 & FUNNY 1290 are probably the best bet... Bell already has that format in Hamilton & Calgary... it's a cheap, easy format to plug & play.

Excellent people worked at Team 1040 over the years. No hockey rights, pandemic, labor intensive...all factors in its eventual demise. I know everyone who worked there gave it their best.

you guys in the biz, was this more cost cutting, moving cash elsewhere rather than saying the profits weren't high enough? They sure seemed to have alot of ads on rotation. ALOT. I still remember the original switch 100 yrs ago, they ran the hell out of one ad - Jacks barbershop , don't know why I remember that trivia. You think 1040 stand alone made money if the accountants didn't fudge numbers?
