In 1930, not to be outdone by the
CNR, the
CPR applied for seven 50KW transmitters, in Vancouver, Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal and either Halifax or St. John (New Brunswick). Plus 15KW transmitters in Fort William (now Thunder Bay), Sudbury, Quebec City and Prince Albert (Saskatchewan). CP (Canadian Pacific) was also negotiating with
NBC and
CBS to extend their programming across Canada through this network of proposed transmitters. Toronto's
CKGW and
CFRB already had affiliation agreements with NBC and CBS, to carry selected programs.
Also in 1930, the CPR was issued a license for a phantom station, to lease time on Toronto stations CKGW or CFRB. Initially known as
CHRY, later to become
CPRY, studios were in the newly-opened Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
