In 1960, CHAK Inuvik signed on to 860 KHz, a Canada/Mexico clear channel, with 1000 watts from a single tower with a non-directional pattern. CBC-owned, the station has always had its own staff and significant amounts of local programming. In the years that followed, more than a dozen 40 watt LPRTs were added throughout the North West Territories (NWT), fed from either CHAK or CFYK Yellowknife.

In 1969, CKXL Calgary was approved by the CRTC to be wholly-owned by Moffat Communications. Four days earlier, the company that owned CKXL had changed its name from Bow Valley Broadcasting to Moffat Broadcasting. Bow Valley had been created in 1964 to acquire CKXL, with Moffat the primary shareholder. Moffat was approved to buy CHFM-FM Calgary on December 21, 1972. Today, Rogers owns both stations, and CFFR-AM Calgary, News 6-60.



In 2000, 1954 Vancouver Commonwealth Games weightlifting champion Doug Hepburn died of a perforated ulcer at age 74. The late Robert O. Smith helped him overcome the depression and loneliness in the last years of his life as Robert O. came back to the powerlifting of his youth, and learned a great deal from Doug's techniques and dedication to drug-free powerlifting, setting several world records himself. Doug was actually well on his way to a comeback when he died. My father attended high school with Doug Hepburn, who was exactly one year less a day older than my father.
