Scott Johnston had his 27-year career at 630 CHED end this morning by way of a phone call. Classy.

I suspect Johnston was the last commercial radio street reporter in Edmonton.

A sad day for those affected by the layoffs, and an even sadder day for democracy. And I have yet to hear of a single CEO being turfed.

Global News lays off unspecified number of staff in "significant" restructuring

TORONTO — Global News is cutting some of its workforce as a “significant” restructuring related to several recent challenges, including COVID-19.

The Canadian news organization owned by Corus Entertainment Inc. confirmed it has laid off staff in an email to The Canadian Press, but declined to provide exact numbers.

Corus executive vice-president of broadcast networks Troy Reeb attributed the layoffs to challenges faced by the news industry in recent years, including regulatory restraints, a lack of government support, advertising losses and most recently, COVID-19.

An internal memo Reeb sent to staff says significant changes will take place at the company’s network digital operations in Toronto and that Globalnews.ca will no longer support lifestyle, entertainment and social media teams.

Reeb says this will help the company shift back to its core mission of providing breaking news and fact-based journalism, while emphasizing video over social media feeds that have lesser benefits for Global.

Reeb says the company has tried to delay layoffs and programming cuts for as long as possible, but in its most recent quarter advertising revenues declined and the company’s news and radio businesses are 100 per cent dependent on such income sources.

Reeb forgot to mention the main reason for declining revenues: crappy content! The local Global/NW News is so bad. On NW, they repeat the same stories hour in and hour out---half of them have absolutely no LOCAL informational value. That says but one thing: lazy employees who go no further then the feeds they're subscribing to.

You got that right. No fresh local content, no eyes and ears. They spend all that money on tech and infrastructure and then cheap out on the lowest cost line item that brings in all the revenue: talent.

Start cutting from the top down. Then revenue will follow.

No, the main loss of revenues is due to COVID. You may not like the content, but in normal circumstances ratings are the main driver of revenue in bigger markets, and NW's are pretty solid.

No question CoVid has affected revenue and that NW has done well in its ratings, but Corus shares and revenues across the board have been dropping long before the pandemic.

Should read, "...than the feeds...".

Global News at 6 almost unwatchable. The reporters make me long for the old days. Sarah MacDonald? Awful! She loves to speed through every story she’s covering. Also, notice her dragging the last word in her sentences...or just making a breathing(?) sound. Nadia Stewart same thing with the speed...”NadiaStewartglobalnews!” So annoying. Oh, and if Gord MacDonald could lose the SING-SONGY voice...which he’s always had...I’d forever be thankful.

Does this come as a surprise?

Selling advertising must be very tough go....and many Companies like CORUS have cut and chopped to the bone, to please shareholders. NOW?

It's going to get very ugly.
