With thanks to Everett McConnaughey, from 1968 here's KBOI Radio Boise, Idaho's move from 950 AM to 670 AM and a power increase to 50,000 watts.

A significant milestone on the road to the end of 1-A Clear Channels. KBOI moved to the frequency occupied by what was then WMAQ in Chicago.

The Havana Treaty, AKA The Big Frequency Shuffle of 1941, licensed only one station to operate at night in any of the treaty countries, on a 1-A Clear Channel, most of them in the U.S.

There was huge pressure on the FCC from broadcasters who did not own a Clear Channel station, to license more stations to the Clear Channels, and the battle seemed to be over at the end of the 1950s, with the FCC promising to "open up" the Clear Channels.

Then, in the early 1960s, the Cold War got really ugly, highlighted by The Cuban Missile Crisis. Nuclear War seemed inevitable.

Suddenly, Clear Channels were seen to be of value, with proposals for power increases to 500 and even 750 KW being talked about. WCCO Minneapolis even has an application on record from that period.

Civil Defense training and Bomb Shelters quickly were forgotten and the FCC approved second stations for most of the 1-A Clear Channels. KBOI was one of the first wave.

KTWO in Wyoming is the one that really hurt, as I lost access to WBZ-1030 in Boston, one great Top 40 station. I would have been upset with 880 being lost, but TGJ in Guatemala had just switched from evenings full of nice marimba music to 6 month old English Top 40 hits, so I didn't miss them.
