Longtime CKNW Engineer John Mair passes

Postby radiofan » Thu Mar 07, 2019 11:03 pm

Just got word from former CKNW/CFMI Chief Engineer Dave Glassteter that longtime CKNW/CFMI Engineer John Mair passed away earlier this week.

John worked at NW from 1970 until the early 2000's. In the early 1970's, he spent some time working at sister station CJOB in Winnipeg helping to rebuild a burnt out transmitter site.

In recent years John suffered from diabetes and had a leg amputed several years ago.

R. I.P. to a longtime former co-worker and to a 47 year friend.

Very sorry to hear this. John knew his stuff and was a good guy to have around.
Thoughts to his friends and family.

Very sorry to learn of John's passing. He greeted me on my arrival at CKNW and we soon spent time together while John fixed some of the older equipment found in the Newsroom. It soon became known that if the four stations in the black tower needed non-digital equipment repaired and brought back to life, Jon was the man you called. I never saw him unhappy in his work.
RIP John.

Sorry to hear of this

Did not know John but Ted had talked a lot about him over the years. I remember asking for help with some old tape recorders.

Ted may have farmed that out to John.

I tried to figure out the other day how long I worked at NW - three times I believe. I seemed to know the old guys in engineering being an old guy my self

Dave - you could help me with those names.

The old guys that were in engineering during my time were:
Jack Gordon
Leo Haydamac
Doug Court
Dave Glasstetter
Don Kalmokoff
Dick DiPalma
John Mair

The only ones left on the upper side of the grass are Dick DiPalma and myself.
