Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

One of those swirling tempo changing epics, Jubilation came in at 6 minutes and 29 seconds. In other words, it was the Hey Jude or MacArthur Park of Paul's career. On Buddah Records no less...home of the chart-dominating 1910 Fruitgum Company, Ohio Express and The Lemon Pipers. Alas, Jubilation would come nowhere near matching the success of songs by those bubblegum acts. On May 6/1972, Jubilation peaked at #65 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Mind, the Buddah roster did--for a spell--include Melanie and the Edwin Hawkins Singers who, on one occasion, combined for the rousing Lay Down (Candles win The Wind). So let's indulge Buddah execs with reckoning Paul to be similarly on the 'artsy' side of label signings.

In 1971, Buddah released the eponymous Paul Anka album which yielded Do I Love You. It peaked at a modest #53 on the Billboard Hot 100. (The album also featured She's A Lady--made famous by Tom Jones--and another Anka original, My Way, which became Frank Sinatra's signature song.)

Other than the title track, the Jubilation album held no other comparable singles. But the title track and other songs sounded great. One reason? Paul had lured Johnny Harris away from the British MOR studio scene to be his arranger and conductor for recorded and live performances. Harris had been a right hand man to Tony Hatch on many Petula Clark sessions. He'd also worked on sides for Tom Jones, Engelbert Humperdinck, Shirley Bassey and Lulu.
