Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

I have to laugh at the two point spread in share numbers we now see with all the abuse that XL 103 took here a few years back and all the kudos for its Edmonton sister station.

Yeah you can't compare share numbers between two different cities but XL at 7.9 and cap at 5.9 does say something. Especially with no big Up numbers to explain it in Edmonton.

No CKRYing this time after all the nail biting from last ratings with the fear that CBC might overtake them this time around.

You think QR was smart enough to realize and worry that the trend from last time's ratings was for 660 news to overtake them this time around? It didn't happen more thanks to a big drop at 660 than the smaller loss at QR. I could see heads rolling at 770 had 660 beat them.

Finally, with all this talk about how important play by play right are, why can't 960 score better ratings?

960's numbers are quite respectable. Unfortunately, the team they have the rights for is way past it's best before date.

The big deal with radio rights doesn't exist anymore. Just about every game for every team is on TV, unlike 10 or so years ago when maybe 10 games a year were televised..

Look at The Los Angeles Kings. They're in the Stanley Cup finals and they don't have a station that broadcasts their games on a regular basis. They shop the PBP around onto whatever station they can
get 3 or 4 hours airtime. Like much of radio today, the prestige of having PBP rights is going the way of Casey Kasem's AT 40.

"XL" should be hanging their heads in shame. With that format and a non-radio station in JACK down the street, they should own the city with 15-20% shares and at least half the demographic.
Country 105 wins by default.

I'm not in Calgary, but looking at the Edmonton market, and the ratings this time out, I have to ask, for both markets, if we haven't finally seen listener burnout on '80s music. Or at least saturation.

To explain what I mean, if the discussion is limited to '80s AC, Top 40 and album-oriented Rock cuts, Edmonton has these commercial stations playing a lot of it (going down the ratings):
  • Now-FM - maybe a quarter of their music
  • K-97 - easily half
  • Capital-FM - around half
  • The Bear - at least a quarter of their music
  • UP - at least half
  • Cruz - more than half
