I am new to the board and don't know how to post a new topic, so I apologize if this is the wrong forum to ask a question in.

I was wondering if it was possible to track down mp3s of some old jingles found on CJOB Winnipeg. They had an xylophone sound effect which signaled the weather (heard here at the 10:58 mark: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6L28NmRPK0). They also had another jingle for relaying messages to listeners; a frenetic tune played with an announcer saying "Relay! Relay!" over it (sorry, no example I can provide) Does anyone know of a location where these two jingles can be found clean without any speaking over them?

This is a great forum by the way, so much interesting material. Thanks!

Welcome to the board, Thom.

I, too, am in search of that weather sounder. CFAC Radio in Calgary also used it, well into the '80s, and I've never found a copy of it in the clear.

Until I saw that CJOB YouTube video I had thought only CFAC used it, having not heard it used anywhere else.

Oh, I KNOW I've heard that somewhere else, too, but I can't recall where.

Now that I've thought on it, I'm wondering if it's one of Eric Siday's "Identitones".

CJCA Edmonton also used it in the early 1970s.

Dr. Music you're correct.

For those with an active Reel Radio membership, there's a version of the sounder, in a short "Identitones" demo at http://www.reelradio.com/mpf/index.html#siday.

I'm pretty sure CKWX used it also. I'll check with Jim Morrison and see if he might have a copy of it in his collection of goodies!

I called it "sprinkles."
It was still in use at CJCA when I arrived there in '76 and still was being used in '83 when I left.
When used at the end of the newscast to ID the weather, we'd fire it from a button in the newsbooth which fired the cart in the control room.
That cart pretty much lived in the bottom slot of the right hand three decker ITC.

Wow, so many responses, fantastic!

I got excited there listening to the CFAC soundcheck, then he spoke over it. Argh! Foiled again!

I don't have a membership to Reel Radio. Double argh!

That's very interesting Mike Cleaver. On CJOB in Winnipeg, that sound was used right up until the 90s I believe and it was dropped.

I live in Manitoba, home to CJOB. I'm a longtime radio fan who's taken an interest in buzzing around shortwave over the last couple of years.

Contact the folks at CJNU in Winnipeg. Glen Miller may be able to send you a copy.

http://www.cjnu.ca/

They use the jingle for weather intro now, as did low power Special Events Station CKVN-FM beginning in 1995 shortly after starting in Winnipeg after their 50th Anniversary od VE Day broadcasts.

Regards to all, glad to be of help.
