Today's Can-Con 45 was a 1971 hit for Winnipeg's Joey Gregorash ... "Down By The River" ...

Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Such a great cover of the Neil Young composition. One of the few times that the cover was as good and many feel better than the original. Gregorash had three top ten hits in Canada- Jodie, Down By the River and Together (The Wedding Song). Only Down By the River had any impact on the US charts and only at #118 on the singles chart in Record World. My Love Sings in 1972 made it into the Canadian top 20.

Interesting to note that both Down By the River, from the album North Country Funk, and Together (The Wedding Song) were both "B" sides and weren't intended to be the hit. In both cases Winnipeg radio was credited with making both these B sides the hit song. Also kind of neat that Together (The Wedding Song) became a huge song for him in 1987 about 25 years after his original success. It is still heard at hundreds of weddings every year.

Joey Gregorash also had a career in radio as a creative writer and announcer, after 1974. He was also a popular TV personality on CKY in Winnipeg hosting a children's noon hour variety show in 80's and early 90's.
