Today's Can-Con 45 is from 1989 ... From Windsor by way of Vancouver, Annette Ducharme and "No Such Thing" ...

Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Annette Ducharme had been a fixture on the Vancouver scene singing on sessions and working with guitarist-vocalist Jamie Bowers. Back in 1978, Bowers had a potential big break by joining Chilliwack. He got his photo on the band's Lights From The Valley album and toured with the group. But litigation over previous members' departures plus shifting personnel of the 'new' Chilliwack saw him leave by 1979.

Annette Ducharme was no stranger to Mushroom Studios. Whether that's where she met Jamie Bowers is unknown. At any rate, Annette's break came when signed in the late 1980s to Capitol Records Canada. She was whisked to Battery Studios in jolly old London. Handling most of the guitar and bass work was Ken Greer. Best known as the steel guitar playing partner to Tom Cochrane in Red Rider, Greer was in the process of splitting from Tom. The resulting 1989 Blue Girl album by Annette featured No Such Thing.

Perhaps Red Rider relations were still good enough that Ken Greer was able to alert soon-to-be solo Tom Cochrane that Annette had songwriting chops. Whatever, her Sinking Like A Sunset was among the singles spawned by Tom's 1991 Mad Mad World album. In fact, serial numbers indicate Sunset was Tom's first American single from Mad Mad World to be released, presumably while Life Is A Highway gathered steam in Canada.

Last time I saw Tom and Red Rider (with original members Greer and bassist Jeff Jones) on the West Coast, Sinking Like A Sunset got some extra oomph. Tom brought Annette on stage and she sang backup on a fiery version of the song.
