After the 2000-2003 Guess Who reunion ended, Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings spent the next few years touring and recording as Bachman Cummings. That meant fewer Guess Who songs and more solo Cummings tunes and BTO oldies.
When it came to Hey You, Burt would tell the audience: "Here's a song that Randy wrote when he was very cross with me." Indeed, Hey You was Randy's way of pushing back at years of Cummings insults fired his way after leaving the Guess Who in 1970.
The Hey You lyric "The music's gone now, You lost it somehow" reflected the reversal of fortunes. Burton and The Guess Who floundered as Randy and BTO became one of the mid-70s highest-grossing concert acts. Bachman and Cummings patched things up in 1976 when Burton embarked on a solo career.
