Tighten ownership, period. Allowing one company or corporation to hold 4 o 6 licenses in a single market is crazy and is leading to the death of terrestrial broadcasting as we used to know it. Cut it back to 1 of each AM, FM & TV. That should be plenty for anyone to manage properly and rewardingly.
Well the CAB has been lobbying for all kinds of changes. In large markets of 16 or more radio stations they want individuals or companies to be allowed to own up to 8 stations. They were also looking for a reduction to 25% cancon on radio and that any song recorded by a Canadian count as cancon. Right now two parts need to be fulfilled
(Music written, Artist featured, Produced or recorded in Canada, Lyrics written) before a song is cancon. Some fear that many stations will fill the 25% quota with only the international cancon cuts and artists- Bryan Adams, Weeknd, Drake, Dion, Twain, Beiber, Mendes etc. etc. since all of their material would now classify as cancon.
The changes this week could be big or maybe not. As mentioned above some think the CRTC may allow foreign companies to increase their percent of ownership in Canadian companies or possibly allow a buyout. However this is only rumour.
Getting back to the CAB, here is what they were proposing to the CRTC back in April 2021 when this process was started. Courtesy of Broadcast Dialogue..
