CRTC Going After 3 Surrey FMs

CRTC Going After 3 Surrey FMs

Postby jon » Fri Mar 04, 2016 2:06 pm

Three Surrey FM stations that obtained their licenses from Industry Canada, without applying to the CRTC, have been cited by the CRTC for violation of their Industry Canada licenses:
  1. 106.9 VF2689 Surrey Myfm Inc. and Ravinder Singh Pannu
  2. 89.3 VF2686 89.3 Surrey City FM Ltd. and Gurpal Singh Garcha
  3. 91.5 VF2688 Sur Sagar Radio Inc. and Ravinder Singh Pannu
All three are running as commercial ethnic stations. The first two were licensed as tourist information stations and the third as "live programming derived solely from houses of worship, such as religious services, weddings, funerals and other religious celebrations and ceremonies."

The two owners (#1 and #3 are both owned by Ravinder Singh Pannu) have been ordered to appear before the CRTC on May 16th during the existing Vancouver hearing scheduled for that date.

The investigation by the CRTC began as a result of a complaint by Vancouver's CKYE-FM, owned by South Asian Broadcasting, and operated as RED-FM. As Dan Sys notes in his Canadian Radio News Facebook page, it is only a matter of time before the other markets will be investigated as similar stations have "recently been approved by Industry Canada in Calgary, Abbotsford, Kamloops, Kelowna, and Penticton."

This story suggests to me that the Federal government needs to get it's act together between the CRTC and Industry Canada with respect to issuing these low power licenses. Then again, I suspect there's more to this story than what's been revealed with this story so far.
