Broadcast History - November 7

In 1969 at 6:00 p.m. on November 7th, the voice of the late Daryl B. introduced the beginning of the History of Rock & Roll on CKLG-AM Vancouver, during a BBM ratings period. Good choice, given that this marked the only period in history where CKLG was rated #1 in Vancouver, a spot normally reserved for CKNW. But scarcely a year and a half would pass before CKLG dropped to #3, thanks to a three way split of the Rock & Roll audience, between CKLG-AM, CKVN (ex-CFUN) and CKLG-FM. This allowed CHQM to have its only #2 ratings period in the 20th century.



Other than that, a quiet day in Canadian broadcasting history, so we again look around the world:

In 1932, Buck Rogers debuted on CBS Radio as a daily 15 minute serial, sponsored by another kind of cereal: Kellogg's. Its original title was The World in 2432, i.e. - exactly 500 years in the future. The Buck Rogers character originated in a Phil Nowlan science fiction tale called Armageddon--2419, published in Amazing Stores in August 1928.

In 1991, a still united Czechoslovakia passed laws creating, as of January 1992, Czech Radio and Czech Television as public service corporations, rather than the former state-run broadcasters. Slovak Television and Slovak Radio had been established in May 1991.

In 1994, WREK Atlanta became the first radio station in the world to simulcast their on-air signal on the Internet. The student owned and operated station at Georgia Tech developed their own software for the task. It would be the following year before RealNetworks was formed, releasing the first version of RealPlayer that same year, 1995.
