In 1969, CKQR-AM Castlegar (B.C.) first signed on, with 1000 watts day and 250 watts night on 1230 KHz. Kokanee Broadcasting Ltd., owners of CKNL Nelson and CFKC Creston, had also applied for a license for Castlegar, but had been turned down, in favour of T.N. Tuch's successful application. CKQR flipped to FM in 1998, but with low power simulcast transmitters in Castlegar and Trail, rather than a single more powerful transmitter serving both communities. Castlegar got 333 watts on 99.3 MHz (CKQR-FM), while Trail was given only 19.9 watts on 104.1 MHz (CHRT-FM). Vista Broadcasting purchased the station and its 84 watt repeater CHNV-FM 103.5 MHz in Nelson.



In 1973, Keith Hampshire's Music Machine debuted on CBC Television, Saturday nights before Hockey Night in Canada. A year later, the show moved to Wednesday nights. The late Doug Riley was Musical Director. Keith had already scored a couple of Top 40 hits by the time the series debuted. He had previously been a Top 40 DJ on British pirate Radio Caroline and then CKFH Toronto. In 1997 at 5:55 a.m., CIVT-TV Vancouver officially launched as "Vancouver Television". Later renamed for the CTV network it controlled, CIVT-TV owner Baton Broadcasting now boasted that it now covered 75% of the English-speaking population in Canada.



In 2006, CJLF-FM Barrie (Ontario) was turned down by the CRTC for a repeater in Iqaluit (Nunavit). What where they thinking when the applied?
