In 1973, Carleton University (Ottawa) was granted a license for a carrier current AM station, with 16 watts on 670 KHz. An FM license followed on June 27, 1975, on 93.1 MHz with 12,000 watts. When CKCU signed on later that year, on November 14, they were the first campus station in Canada since day-to-day operation of CKUA Edmonton had been transferred from the University of Alberta to the Alberta Government in the 1940s.
