In 1979, CJAZ-FM Vancouver was licensed as Canada's first All Jazz station. A year later, the station was on the air, on 92.1 MHz, from a Saltspring Island transmitter location. Owner Selkirk Broadcasting also owned CKWX. The station has since been through a frequency change, to 96.9 MHz, a transmitter move to Mount Seymour, and two (each) call letter and format changes, currently running a Jack-FM format as CKLG-FM. The station has had a same-frequency repeater in Whistler since 2000.

In 1985, CKVU-TV Vancouver was approved by the CRTC to move from Channel 21 to Channel 10, but with a decrease in power from 880,000 watts to 285,000 watts. The transmitter remained on Saltspring Island, which had long been a problem for off-air reception in Vancouver, given the coverage issues associated with UHF. But on Channel 10, both Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland were promised great reception.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.
