In 1981, CHUM was approved to purchase CJDV Drumheller, CHOA Stettler and CKBR Brooks. CHUM quickly moved to upgrade the studio equipment for all three stations. And change call letters to CKDQ, CKSQ and CIBQ, to match the new Q Country branding.

In 1998, Monarch was approved to acquire CJCY-AM Medicine Hat. And to flip it to FM, on 96.1 MHz with 100,000 watts. The flip occurred later that same year, and call letters changed to CFMY-FM, with branding as My 96. Less than three years later, Jim Pattison purchased Monarch.

In 2001, Rick Honey died in Vancouver after a long battle with throat cancer, at age 54. His last air shift was morning drive Feb. 22 on CKBD Vancouver. Rick spent most of his career, more than 20 years, at CKNW, where he was usually heard on afternoon drive. CKNW hired him from CKLG during a period of recruiting top young local radio personalities. Rick started out at 16 at CJOB Winnipeg, then to Northern Ontario and the Maritimes before CKLG. Upon hearing of Rick's death, Daryl B. died of a massive stroke three days later. We have airchecks of Rick and Daryl here on RadioWest at

In 2003 at 8:45 a.m., CKRA-FM Edmonton switched from Mix 96 (Hot AC) to 96X (current hits). Today the station is '80s and Oldies as Capital-FM.

In 2005, CKVX-FM Kindersley, Saskatchewan, was licensed by the CRTC to Golden West. The station signed on later that year as Mix 104.9 with 50 watts. The transmitter shared the co-owned CFYM-AM tower.

In 2006 at 11:45 a.m., CKFE-FM Winnipeg, Cafe 100.7 FM, opened its new studio in a Winnipeg downtown pedway -- a mid-air structure connecting two building across and above a street, known in Winnipeg as a SkyWalk. The station's first three years on the air had been from studios in an old steakhouse.
