In 1927,
CFRB Toronto had its official opening ceremonies beginning at 8:45 p.m. on 291 metres with 1000 watts from a transmitter at Bond Lake. The call letters stand for "Canada's First Rogers Batteryless" and the station demonstrated the ground-breaking AC power transmitter design of
Ted Rogers, Sr.. He had previously invented AC-powered radio receivers for the consumer market. Until then, both radios and radio stations required DC power, from batteries or mechanical generators.
With the death of Ted Rogers, Sr., in 1939, his widow lost control of CFRB in 1946. The late
Ted Jr. was barely a teenager at the time, and never did gain control of the station. It was sold to
Astral in 2007.
In 2004 at 1:07 p.m.,
Q-107 Calgary was born, as a format change for CKIK-FM. Call letters changed to CFGQ-FM on September 15th of the same year. Format changed from Hot Adult Contemporary to Classic Rock.
