In 1979, CKWX-owned CJAZ-FM Vancouver was approved for use of 92.1 MHz from a transmitter site on Salt Spring Island. The station had been approved by the CRTC the previous February, but asked to find a new frequency. CJAZ signed on March 1, 1980, as Canada's first all-jazz station. Today, the station is a JACK-FM station with very similar call letters: CJAX-FM.
In 2006, Charles Allard was approved by the CRTC to become majority shareholder of CJCA and CJRY-FM Edmonton and CJSI-FM Calgary.
Also in 2006, CILK-FM Kelowna, one of the most profitable independent stations in the country, was approved by the CRTC for sale by founder Nick Frost to Standard Radio (now Astral Media) for about nine million dollars. The station had originally been licensed one day less than 22 years earlier, on December 21, 1984. On June 6, 2000, Nick had sold his pioneering ISP Internet business just before the Dot COM bubble burst. He had upwards of 6000 Internet customers. When last contacted, Nick was very much enjoying retirement.
