In 1984, many Graveyard Stations -- those on the Local Channels of 1230, 1240, 1340, 1400, 1450 and 1490 KHz -- were granted power increases by the CRTC to 1000 watts at night. Previously, they had been limited by International Agreement to 1000 watts day and 250 watts night non-directional. Alaska, Hawaii, and the Canadian territories were exempt from certain provisions of these International Agreements. CFYK Yellowknife, for example, was 1000 watts full-time on 1340 KHz when I was there in 1974. More frequently, however, the exemption was Alaskan and Hawaiian stations licensed to U.S. and Mexico/Canada Clear Channels, though CFFB Frobisher Bay was licensed to 1200 KHz for many years, the clearest of the Clear Channels in the 1960s.
