In 1984, CKQR Castlegar was approved to move from 1230 KHz with 1000 watts to 760 KHz with 20,000 watts day and 5000 watts night. 760 KHz had once been a U.S. 1-A clear channel with WJR Detroit the only North American station on the air at night. KFMB San Diego had moved from 540 to 760 in the mid-1960s.
In 1990, the CBC announced budget cuts that resulted in Calgarians getting all their News from Edmonton. Ironically, the process was reversed in the early 2000s; local News was restored to Edmonton in 2007. I cannot speak for the earlier move, but the most recent decimated CBXT-TV's ratings in the hard fought Edmonton Supper Hour News battle. Back in 1990, CRTC approval was required for the change, with CBRT-TV Calgary to receive all but "station identification, public service announcements, occasional specials, and commercial messages" from CBXT-TV Edmonton.
In 1996 at 5:00 a.m., CHET-FM Chetwynd (B.C.) became English Canada's first Class A Community Radio Station. Broadcasting on 104.1 MHz with 50 watts, the station ran out of a former closet at Chetwynd Secondary School. A 50 watt FM rebroadcaster, CHAD-FM, was added in 2002 for Dawson Creek, also on 104.1 MHz.
