In 1964,
CHQR Calgary signed on the air for the first time, with 10,000 watts into four 305 foot towers on 810 KHz. Despite an increase to 50,000 watts in 1974, which required the addition of a fifth tower, night-time signal was always a problem, especially as Calgary grew Southward.
KGO San Francisco was the culprit. CRTC approval was given in 1985 for a switch to the former U.S. clear channel of 770 KHz, with a six tower array located five miles South East of the previous site. Unfortunately, a manager's request to make the change at 8:10 a.m., which is also 70 minutes after 7:00 a.m. (7-70, get it?), was turned down.
In 2003,
George Cooper died in San Antonio, Texas. Nicknamed on-air "Super Cooper", George spent 42 years in Radio, 20 of them at
KONO San Antonio. Born in the small Texas town of Bangs, on October 30, 1933, George was an award-winning French Horn player, as well as a DJ at
KBOX Dallas,
KULF Houston,
WINZ Miami and KONO San Antonio.
