Born in St. Boniface and raised in Milliardville BC, Lucille Starr passed away on Friday September 4th in Las Vegas, she was 82. Lucille was the first Canadian female to have a million selling single with the French Song (Quand Le Soleil Dit Bonjour Aux Montagnes) from 1964. This bilingual tune was a hit across Canada, in Europe and reached #54 in the US on Billboard. She was unique in that being a French Canadian entertainer, she was from the west and not Quebec or New Brunswick. Starr always said she was a proud Canadian and made sure that writers and interviewers knew she was a Franco-Manitoban from St. Boniface.
Her follow up song was Jolie Jacqueline which also picked up airplay across Canada. In 1969 Lucille had a number one country hit with Cajun Love.
