an example of radio reinventing itself

Postby crs » Sat Mar 14, 2009 10:33 pm

Just came across this on the cnn.com website, great twist to the old classic "Trading Post", "Swap 'n Shop" or "Bargain Mart" type shows that were the hallmark of radio in years gone by.

Newcap does "The Trading Post" on some of its stations. I've heard it on The Fox stations. Done live in small markets.

But this CNN article is about a great idea in a major market: free (unsponsored) job ads being read on-air on WHAS-840, a former 1-A Clear Channel -- no other station on the same frequency at night anywhere in North America -- and still a pretty good frequency, with their non-directional 50,000 watts from Louisville, Kentucky. In fact, they are usually the only station readily audible on 840 at night here in Edmonton, now that Grande Prairie has moved to FM, and CFCW Camrose is still working on their move to the frequency.

Just for fun, here are some late 1920s or early 1930s EKKO, Bryant and other reception verification stamps from WHAS:

Why not the whole station all week? They'd get some ratings :D
