Who's That Broadcaster?

Postby jon » Wed Feb 25, 2009 4:56 pm

Who is the Canadian broadcaster pictured on this to-be-released-tomorrow "Save the Date" notice?

Hint: don't let the call letters on the microphone fool you? That was Photo-Shopped in by the folks in Atlanta.

Going out on the limb of a somewhat older tree but could it be a very young Harvey Kirck?

Great guess! In fact, Harvey and this gentleman have a couple of radio stations in common: CJCJ Calgary, where they may even have worked together (not sure the dates for either of them), and CKEY Toronto, where they missed each other by several decades.

I should also mention that, unlike Harvey, who died in 2002, our mystery guest is still alive and well, and enjoying retirement -- and is closer than you might think.

North Stars

Postby jon » Thu Feb 26, 2009 10:02 pm

Lots of great info here:
http://www.vintageminnesotahockey.com/AlShaver.html
including:
"Al Shaver, was the legendary radio voice of the Minnesota North Stars for 26 years."
"Al Shaver's son Wally Shaver is currently the radio play-by-play announcer for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers hockey program along with his radio partner Glen Sonmor."
"Today, Iowa Stars fans enjoy the radio call from a third-generation broadcaster, Jason Shaver, who is Wally Shaver's son."

There are also some nice pics and WCCO material with Al on it.

Not sure he planned it that way, but Al graduated in 1948, and then spent 48 years doing Sports, before retiring.
