How many radio stations are enough in a market?

Postby Tape Splicer » Sat Mar 14, 2015 10:03 pm

As I was looking at the PPM lists these are the questions and comments that came to mind.
So with the mindset that no question is a dumb one;
1) How many Radio stations are enough for a given market?
2) Has the CRTC allowed too many stations in these markets?
There are 19 stations shown in the Vancouver PPM list and 18 in both Edmonton and Calgary. There seem to be several competing stations with similar formats whose numbers aren't that stellar.
3) Does "narrow-casting" really work as a way to make money in radio? Or
4) Are the radio stations the money losers for the large cooperation to have a tax write-off?
As for real variety - Oh sorry, what variety ... station clusters with similar formats is no variety at all. Thee is nothing to choose from. Is it any wonder that the numbers are so dismal.

The floor is open for comments, Am I off base with these questions - I wonder if the CRTC is considering similar questions.

A quick check online revealed the following list of owners with two or more stations targeting the metro Vancouver area.
This list does not show owners of only one station. There are five or six of these stations.

Newcap
- CISL AM, CHLG FM, CKZZ FM
Rogers
- CkWX AM, CJAX FM, CFUN FM

Bell
- CFTE AM, CKST AM, CHQM FM, CFBT FM
Pattison

NOTE: Missing from the above CBC cluster is CBUX FM
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
There are several owners of one station serving Metro Vancouver;
LT Productions
- CJRJ AM,
Mainstream Group
- CHMB FM
South Asia Broadcasting
- CKYE FM
Co-op Radio
- CFRO FM
M. G. McBride
- CKPM FM
Voices Radio
- CKAV FM
UBC
- CITR FM
SFU
- CJSF FM
BCIT
- CFML
Coming soon...(If not already on the air);
Round House Radio
- CIRH FM

The list above shows 10 stations ...Add the previous list of 22 (including CBUX FM ) for a total of 32 stations in metro Vancouver. Are we over served? Is there too much concentration ? ... Again the floor is open.

Leaving out the ethnic broadcaster and the mother corp we have a billionaire, three cable companies and an investment banker owning Vancouver radio stations. Pretty cozy isn't it? Tell me again how there's no money in radio....

In the first listing the "ethnic" stations are owned by Fairchild media group. They are in good company with the other "big boys" on the block... Here is a link to a Wikipedia article;
