CKNW Maharajah Song

Postby radiofan » Sat Jul 26, 2008 9:39 am

If you were a CKNW listener in 1963, you may recall a promotion they did in which a Maharajah was planning to buy BC. As I recall he drove around town and handed out all kinds of cash to people in stores, on the street etc.

Part of the promotion included this song by NW's Bobby Hughes pleaing with then premier W.A.C. Bennett to not sell B.C.

CKNW Maharajah

Do ya think the lyrics would work today?
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Doesn't CKBD play that one in regular rotation as part of their Adult Standards CanCon? I'm going to miss it when they switch to FM.

I must admit, though, that I do miss the almost daily adventures of the Flying Filbert. Despite the newly-elected NDP government, Phil was still a much-talked-about legend in Prince Rupert when I was there, for his work on the last leg of the Yellowhead into Prince Rupert.

It was Bennett Jr. who said ``I won't sell BC`` during his term. Maybe
he listened to the song when dad was the premier.

Thanks RF for putting on the singing tones of the great BOBBY Hughes
not to be confused with Bill H.

Bobby and Jack Cullen were best of
buds.
