Hot 103, QX-104 big winners in music radio market

WHEN it comes to music on the radio dial, Astral Radio dominates the Winnipeg market.

The two stations it owns -- top 40 station Hot 103 and country station QX-104 -- are the choice of 20 per cent of local listeners aged 12 and up, according to the latest radio ratings.

The fall BBM book (formerly known as S4) was released Thursday and the two local Astral stations were the big ratings winners compared to last year. QX-104 increased its listenership by 1.6 per cent for a 9.1 share, while Hot 103 was up 1.4 to 11.2 per cent. Other stations that reported increases were BOB (up 1.1 to 7.8), Clear (up 0.5 to 7.2) and Curve (up 0.5 to 4.0).

The remaining stations sampled during the Sept. 7 to Nov. 1 ratings period lost listeners.

Talk and news are still tops in the city with CJOB holding strong in first place with a 16.2 per cent share, followed by CBC Radio 1 at 11.3, Hot 103, QX-104 and BOB. In the 25-54 demographic coveted by advertisers, Hot 103 leads with 16.5 followed by CJOB (13.6), BOB (13.5), CITI (12.8) and Power (11.8).

"What stands out for me is that Hot 103 is such a monster of a station," said Astral Radio general manager Sharon Taylor. "It's number one on the FM dial by a long shot in every single demographic, with adults, young adults and kids. It's Winnipeg's radio station."

The fall and spring ratings books are important for radio stations since they help determine advertising rates. Next year the BBM ratings will only be held twice, in the spring and fall, instead of four times a year, as new listening technology -- the Portable People Meter (PPM) -- is rolled out in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton. The PPMs are about the size of a pager and automatically detect broadcast codes wherever a person is and sends it to BBM for tabulation.

There is no timetable for the rollout of the new technology in Winnipeg, so Winnipeggers will have to continue to keep a written diary of their listening habits for the BBM.

Here's the complete list of 12-and-up ratings from the new BBM book, with last year's fall numbers in parentheses:

1. CJOB - 16.2 (17.0)

2. CBC Radio 1 - 11.3 (11.7)

3. Hot 103 - 11.2 (9.8)

4. QX-104 - 9.1 (7.5)

5. BOB - 7.8 (6.7)

6. CITI - 7.2 (7.7)

6. Clear - 7.2 (6.7)

8. Power - 6.3 (6.5)

9. Curve - 4.0 (3.5)

10. CBC Radio 2 - 3.3 (3.5)

11. CFRW - 2.1 (2.8)

12. Groove - 1.4 (2.5)

13. HANK - 0.9 (1.2)

14. CKSB - 0.3 (0.4)

Other non-reporting stations accounted for the remaining 11.7 per cent, down from 12.5 per cent a year ago.
