QM/MOVE should have done *much* better given that this book contained peak Christmas Music. But, as successful as that usually is, it gets diluted when too many stations jump on the bandwagon. Christmas music on 103.5, 104.3, and 106.5 didn't really help any of them, but if only one had done it, they would have dominated.

Virgin Radio & Z95.3 are the big winners while The Breeze and Praise out of Lynden got a Christmas gift of better ratings during December. QMFM did not. They are MOVEing in the wrong direction. Funny 1040 is about to join the company of the other 3 stations below 1% of listening. The Vancouver Whitecaps and BC Lions are still looking for a new radio host. Any takers?

Numeris does not include listening to out of market radio stations, Sirius/XM, Stingray Music, YouTube or other streaming services. Conclusion: These ratings are only comparing the local radio stations amongst themselves.

In past years there has always been 3 or 4 stations in the Vancouver market playing Christmas, and QM was always the winner. I'm wondering if QM may have had a great December and the loss of the longtime QM-FM identity on December 27th when they became MOVE threw longtime listeners in search of a new home on the radio dial?

Their December, of course, was great, but not a great as usual. QM was lagging before the name change. COVID has been tough on AC everywhere.

Christmas music was depressed on all stations that usually do it; in fact, only one, CHFI, was #1 this book, and they're often #1 anyway.

Guess people just weren't in the same holiday spirit this year, "for some reason".

Yes, the Move transition was exactly what did 103.5 in ratings-wise. Look at their numbers from the previous XMAS, with 104.3 also doing the same all-XMAS music. It's got nothing to do with Christmas fatigue.

Virgin and Z95.3 are the big winners here. What the Move heads may not have been aware of is that both of their audiences span broad ranges; it's not simply focused in the <25 segment. With the Love Songs program gone and putting in some dance remixes of older songs in place of standard versions, 103.5 is sounding a lot like Top 40 or Hot AC stations, with a lot of 80's music thrown in. Clearly that mix isn't working for 103.5's former audience.

CHQM's numbers in the last three books have been 7.1, 7.4, 7.4. The switch to MOVE has not moved the ratings one way or the other. And yes, this book would have been bigger had Christmas Music not been soft this year.

Also, they are not targeting <25.

In short, you don't know what you're talking about.

Sorry, Aaron, you're entitled to your opinion, but the numbers show otherwise. The last few Xmas periods have seen a huge boost for 103.5 in the ratings. They've had competition several times.

Correct, 103.5 is not targeting young adults. The point is that Virgin and Z95.3 actually have a fair number of older adults in the audience, something that Move may or may not have realized.

As it applies to QM changing branding to Move, in the PPM world does it matter that much anymore?
The meters don't care about the brand or even you like that station.

Correct that branding in itself doesn't have much of an impact on popularity. Virgin, Jack FM and the Breeze are every bit as branded.

The potential impact begins when the stations have centralized playlists, resulting in lack of local input. Not to mention inability to respond to what other stations are doing.

The bigger impact in this case was how Move introduced the switch, which is a classic example of how to sabotage a popular station. Between Dec 27 and Jan 3 all the on-air announcers were pulled over the airwaves. Some of the fixtures, such as Nat and Drew's year end countdown, weren't broadcast.

Radio stations sometimes do that when introducing a new format. Ironically, 103.5 wasn't introducing a new format at all. It was the old format minus the popular Love Songs program, local countdowns and some of the mellower songs they used to include. Basically, what listeners got was essentially Z95.3 plus 80's music, minus the on-air announcers. I wouldn't be surprised if 15 to 25 percent of their listeners looked for another station at that point, before everyone was brought back on the air.

Centralized playlists have been part of radio for many years, perhaps nowadays it's more obvious to those of us who pay attention to such things, but the average listener doesn't care. When you do a music test for a given format in one market typically the scores will be the same in other markets so it makes complete sense and the local listeners aren't affected. One obvious difference might be that a country song would test better in Calgary than it would in other markets, but still each station that is using an imported music log will have the opportunity to tweak it for their market.

As for 103.5 losing 15 to 25% of their listeners, I don't agree but anything can happen

Fair comment.

One virtue with 103.5 not having a centralized playlist in the past was that they could adjust depending on the competition. (One could make the argument than this serves the station more than the listener, which is fair comment as well). 15 years ago shortly after JackFM came out, 103.5 added more uptempo and some Rockish songs to their mix, to take the sting out of 96.9. Two years ago, they shifted to an all-encompassing format including some mellower songs, to take the sting out of The Breeze. Those songs pretty much disappeared with the Move takeover.

In general, I agree that there should be no specific reason for large variation in preferences between markets. That said, there are often notable differences in markets, such as cultural makeup. Our demographics are very multicultural compared to some.

One has to wonder, for instance: why is Virgin Radio at the forefront of ratings here, but dead last in music stations in Edmonton, with the exact same format? They even have 104.9 competing with them here, competition they don't have in Edmonton. Their morning show is popular here, but that can't be the only reason. I don't have the answers, except to say there's obvious differences between markets.

The 15-25 percent figure was my estimate at the number of listeners during the post-XMAS period checking out alternatives. That number may turn out to be concrete if Move lets go of Nat and Drew, and sadly there's been speculation that this may happen. But this sort of thing seems par for the course for centralized radio stations these days.

In terms of adjusting the music based on what your competition might be doing, that doesn't happen much in the same way that it did back in the days when CFUN and CKLG were battling it out. Obviously that was before I was in radio but from what I understand they did make music changes relating to what the competition was doing. Since BDS and MediaBase existed it hasn't really been a thing. As for adding local content, the imported log can always be tweaked for example if a given artist is performing in that city you might throw in more songs by them.

As for Virgin here vs. Virgin Edmonton, I haven't seen the AM Drive numbers in either market, but the morning show on KISS Edmonton is quite solid and Pepper & Dylan are well known in the market. The role reversal between the Rogers & Bell CHR stations between the two markets may be because the leading station in each market have been in the format for longer. This is just speculation on my part.

As I mentioned, anything can happen, it's rare for a station to lose that much in a short time span, so that's why I disagreed with that statement. As for replacing Nat & Drew, yes obviously that would be a huge mistake, even still, if they did something like that it would probably take a year for it to show up in the ratings. Look at the once mighty CHUM FM in Toronto, they had an awesome morning show, legendary in the market, through a series of bad decisions they are now 3.5 in 12+. One thing that seems apparent in all of the moves that Bell is making on the radio side, paying talented broadcasters an appropriate amount isn't part of their business plan. If you look higher up at who is making the decisions, at Rogers you have Julie Adam, at Corus you have Brad Phillips and at Stingray you have Steve Jones, all smart, all savvy and all radio programmers. Is there anyone like that at Bell, there was Rob Farina, but he's gone now. So allow me to make a prediction, we will watch as Bell media radio stations in every market and every format lose share over time. Eventually they will try to sell the radio stations, but by then it will be too late and nobody will want to buy them.
