WHO WAS THE RADIO CONSULTANT CHUM USED IN 70s

Postby PicturesForYourEars » Mon Jul 28, 2014 7:55 pm

Had coffees the other day with an old co-worker..we hadn't seen each other in FORTY years.

Of course... he had to reminiece about the old consultant that used to put fear in the hearts of jocks, when they found out he was in town.

He also consulted a lot of stations like CFBC, CJON, etc.

Think his first name was 'GEORGE"???

George Davies perhaps???

Anybody??

Cobwebs have settled in our brains on this one!

The same George Johns is a frequent poster on the Face Book "Radio Folks" group page,if you would like to correspond.

George DAVIES consulted both CHUM and Moffat stations in the 70s and CHUM stations in the 80s.
George noticed me at CKXL in 71 and told Dick Smyth, who flew me to Toronto and hired me to start in September of 72.
He also recommended CHUM hire me again in 83.
He was the only consultant who knew how to do the job.
He'd spend a week in the city, listening to his client station and the competition and then make a detailed report to management who passed on his comments to staff.
Yes, you lived or died by what George said and he generally was right.

I don't know if I would have had much of a career without George in my corner; I'm certain I would not have had such a long stay with CHUM, as a company, without his positive opinions of me and whatever the hell I thought I was doing on the air. Conversely, whenever bad habits were developing or mistakes needed correcting, George was quick to point them out to Chuck McCoy and other PD's who ruled over me and that was a good thing too.
It was intentional that we, as air talent, were never in direct contact with George and, with rare exceptions, none of us who were so affected by his judgement ever actually met the man.

Thanks for that Mike and NS. I had a brain cramp.

I never met Mr. Davies, but he, combined with Chuck McCoy, prove it is no wonder CFUN powered to the top of the pile.

Working at 1900 West Fourth was an honour. NS and Fred and Hault and "The Luker", "Too Loud", Rich Elwood, and crew were the most talented group I ever worked with.

BOY, did we have a blast.

Funny story..
In the late 70 s i was in Saint John.
PD Mark Lee told me this.

Mark received a call from George Davies just after midnight.
He had just arrived in town.

'God dam it Mark. They found out somehow I'm in town. I was just in the cab from the airport.
I couldn't quite catch the whole set...but...
I HEARD THE JOCK SAYING SOMETHING ON AIR ABOUT ME"

Mark thought it would be funny to name his all night jock..
GEORGE.
DAVIES!!

Yup .... George Davies it was.

Mr Davies also helped me out with strong recommendations several times, and echoing "Hag, old buddy old pal's" statement ..... working at CFUN was extreme fun, and the highest morale of any of the stations I worked at.

I have to say a personal thanks to Chuck McCoy for making a huge contribution to my enjoyment of my radio career when we kicked ass in the market, and the transition period of my becoming a professional pilot.

Cheers folks!

AWG is way too modest - if he had NOT taken me under his wing and showed patience and kindness, I never would have had a career. Never a negative word. WE all felt every break had to be perfect and with the quality people I worked with, my God, it was a machine.

AWG was THE FIRST person to ever take the time to explain riding gain and mike use etc. He also did it with a sly sense of fun, that made every day a joy. I hold cherished memories of AWG and Peter "Boom Boom " Benson and our crew and they never dim. Fly safely, Skip.

Aw shucks Hag, old buddy old pal .... 'twernt nothin.

But what a great place to work.

Some on my resume had greater cumes, some greater flexibility to "do your own thing," but absolutely nothing came close to the "fun and pride factor" of CFUN.

A couple of years ago, I created a fantasy parody post describing on what it was like when Peter Benson and I were trying to get the station to do production.

This was always our dream .... but never was quite as good as the video ........ LOL
