Kingston = no AM signals.

Radio News from Ontario

Chalk up Kingston, Ontario as the next possible medium sized Canadian market with a silent AM band. Both remaining AM stations CFFX 960 and CKLC 1380 have applied to flip to FM:

To add a bit of spice to the situation Kingston's K-ROCK (CIKR 105.7) has applied for a new Country FM in the city as well:

All 3 applications involve utilizing different FM frequencies, so it's quite conceivable that they could all be approved.

What's interesting about that is that K-ROCK has LMA'd the 102.7 WBDR signal in Cape Vincent NY and is running it from Kingston as country KIX 102.7, 0% Cancon and #1 12+ in the market.

Wonder what the future plans for 102.7 are?

I hear that there has been a falling out and K Rock plans to launch it's own country station, to compete against their old American partners, by saying that 102.7 doesn't have any cancon and K Rock getting a country station would better serve the community. Sounds pretty weak to me.

The K-ROCK application is bizarre, with only a brief mention of being the Canadian "rights holder" to Kix.

The Corus application, meanwhile, goes so far to include scans of a K-ROCK/Kix/Border Sales rep's business card with the 3 logos on it.

I'll bet if the relationship has ended badly, and K-Rock gets its country licence, the American station will take the fight right to K-ROCK with a pure Classic Rock format.

Corus was so stupid. Country 96 had been there so long no one else would have tried country in that market.

It's funny that Froggy is such a non-player despite its 100 thousand watt signal. Yet in Watertown it has a 20 share.

Back when 'CIZ was on that frequency, they were quite active in Kingston with promotions and sales. You'd think the Corus flip would have been a perfect opportunity for them to revisit that. Good for them for statying local to their city of licence, I guess.

All 3 applications for Kingston were approved today. It will be interesting to see if CKLC actually does retain the Adult Standards-AC format on FM as promised in the application....somehow I doubt it. We only have to look at what happened in Peterborough with a similar FM flip for CKPT a couple weeks ago. CHUM/CTV Globe Media promised to keep the Adult Standards-AC format on FM, but in the end the station became Energy 99.3 with Hot AC.

K-ROCK last month registered kix935.com/ca, so I guess we know where that's going. Interesing to see what becomes of 102.7.

Corus and CTV are going to have to move really fast to beat the other in getting a HotAC/CHR on the air.
