1550 in Windsor coming back to life?

Postby Dan Sys » Fri Jun 01, 2012 9:54 am

The CBC has applied to move Premiere Chaine services in Windsor from 540 AM to 1550 AM, increase power from 2,500 watts days/5,000 watts nights to 10,000 watts fulltime, and relocate the transmitter site to the facilities of the former CBE 1550 Windsor which flipped to 97.5 FM in September, 2011.

In conjunction with this application the CBC has also applied for a new Premiere Chaine service to be located in Sarnia, Ontario at 98.3 with 2,320 watts to make up for projected signal deficiencies in the Sarnia area if the application to move CBEF 540 to 1550 is approved.

It is unclear at this point whether the previously approved CBEF 540 nested repeater on 105.5 in Windsor will still go ahead.

One must wonder what is wrong with 540? Gets out good on an ok frequency, so why change it?
Oh well, if it comes to past I will be able to get CBK as DX easier!

Andy.....the application was in French only, but I copy/pasted it into Google translate. The paragraph below might explain why they want to move the station to 1550. No funds to replace the equipment I imagine, while the 1550 facilities are still sitting there intact.

---------------------------------------

An inspection in August 2011 has discovered a serious rust problem. The towers are obsolete and should be completely replaced. The building dates from 1970 and the main transmitter is also due for replacement. And finally, the presence of power lines hydro materially affects the quality of the signal CBEF.
