Global Vancouver strikes again

Postby Jim Walters » Sun Dec 18, 2022 7:58 pm

Does Global actually have a chopper for traffic reports on a Sunday?

After watching the coverage of today's snow mess in Greater Vancouver, there was a couple of traffic reports in which the reporter (somebody Tubbs) was over the Port Mann Bridge and a few minutes later over Pattullo Bridge. In both
reports no mention of any snow problems, just traffic moving smoothly on a Saturday night. Really, I was under the impression it was Sunday today. I've always found these reports to be useless, the sponsor credit is always longer than
the report. By the looks of the bridge decks below, I'm thinking they just rerun Saturday reports on Sunday for the advertising dollars.

Channel surfing last night at 6pm.
Channel surfing again last night (Sunday) at 11pm.
Saw the exact same newscast from 6pm at 11pm, recorded, on Global.
Such a shame for a major market station to not even bother to produce an 11pm newscast anymore.

I also noted that a reporter spoke of "Sunday's" snowfall (not "today's) in a report obviously produced for the Monday news run.
Sorry state of affairs.

Hi there,

I anchored Global’s 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts on Sunday, so thought I’d chime in:
- The traffic reports were live, but the airborne reporter misspoke and said Saturday instead of Sunday. My sincere apologies for this.
- The 11 p.m. newscast was live Sunday night (and every night!) and had six new stories/items not aired at 6 p.m.

Thanks for reading… and watching!

Forgive me for thinking it was the same exact newscast?
I believe the anchor didn't even have rewritten/revised intros to the same stories from the 6:00 p.m. package.
Were they the same or rewritten?
Correct me if I'm wrong.
There were (just) six new stories?
So "essentially" it was an identical newscast with an identical host with no attempt to freshen it up, it would seem.

And running a story about Sunday's snow storm that was obviously written in a past tense , for the Monday news run....
Something's not right.
Or am I completely wrong

Hey Jordan... thanks for chiming in!
You should know that there are a few people who show up here when they're not yelling at kids to get off their lawn.

Not only did I re-write the intros, the visuals were updated, too. Proof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvvNMaif8HQ
(I'm all for fair criticism of my industry and station. When it's fair).

Got it.
All SEEMED the same, to a casual viewer who's learned not to expect much from Global in 2022.

Anyone that is watching Global (or CTV or City) for "news" is as ignorant as someone watching WWE thinking they are watching sports.

A. Agree with Picturesforyourears. Heard exactly as he put it.
B. I’ll never fully understand TRAFFIC on TV...ridiculous!
C. As a former radio/TV broadcaster, Global BC...a major market television station... has a number of reporters that make me cringe for lack of skill.
D. Jordan Armstrong is not among them. He is very talented.

Makes sense on morning TV as people are getting ready to leave for work. Also, many traffic "reports" exist to collect that sweet CTN money.

I figured out what caused little ole me to think both 6 and 11pm newscasts were the same while channel surfing.
(Besides as the talented Mr. Armstrong pointed out only 6 different stories) ...

SAME HOST.
HOST DID NOT CHANGE HIS JACKET.
HOST DID NOT CHANGE HIS SHIRT.
HOST DID NOT CHANGE HIS TIE.

Well excuuuuse me.

Aaron:
RADIO itself has always seemed to work quite well for morning traffic reports. Those visuals on TV with green, yellow and red arrows are just annoying look at. Ya okay...let’s suck in every advertising dollar we possibly can.
And Merry Christmas!

You need a wardrobe change after 6 hours? You need to get outside more.

Do you confuse real life events with opinion pieces? There is a difference...
