Thanks to Joe Hanson for posting this 1993 TV commercial, on YouTube, for Vancouver's 980 CKNW -

It features the late John Ashbridge.

Oh how I long for those NW days of professionalism and competency. Today’s newsman would likely mispronounce Squamish.

In the car Friday morning. 'NW is airing a talk show from Calgary with local contributions from 'NW. It's a weekly show on Fridays from different CORUS Talk stations. Why? If 'NW has the best ratings of CORUS stations country-wide, why plug into those less than stations?

I also wonder about NW News. During the same car ride, I heard a 'cast consisting of only TV audio clips. The reporters (thankfully) made no visual references but there were background sounds that weren't explained. Is 'NW totally without reporters that they can't do their own stories? Some of the TV clips were very long compared to what used to be a standard 35-second radio report.

All of the above in addition to the TV reports that air several times daily and into the next day, when it's no longer News.

Whoever the news director is at NW should be shown the door. Kids who can't read, no effort to rewrite stories, same stories running too long, and the old, laughable 'Breaking News.' Example, the other day the cutie patootie reading the news announced 'breaking news' in a really weak voice then went on to report a man had been stabbed on East Hastings. Really, that's breaking news. Cmon NW bosses, you're breeding laziness. And it shows loud and clear. Switched to CBC...

Remember, the "bosses" at 'NW are really at CORUS-owned Global TV. Story assignments start with TV, and then get passed to radio (same owner). For the most part, reporters and their stories are shared.
