The Old Disc Jockey has passed away

The man I suspect was on the air longer than any other Canadian radio announcer ever, Jack Hagerman, has passed away. He began in 1946 at CFQC in Saskatoon, and has been at CKUA continuously since 1949.

Many decades ago (I've seen varying dates at different sources), Jack first filled in on the Big Band music program on CKUA, also known as "The Old Disc Jockey" program. To avoid conflicts with his management role, he called himself John Worthington. The program has been his ever since. Although he stopped producing new programs, he continued to update the programs to keep them fresh, pretty much up to the time of his death, as they still air weekly.

Perhaps his greatest accomplishment, however, was keeping the station together when it looked sure to fall apart after the enthusiasm of saving the station in 1997 was turning into Burn Out, as staff suddenly realized what life was like with wages that were half what they had been before CKUA went off the air earlier that year.

I already miss you, Jack.
