If it wasn't for this aircheck, and the renewed awareness of Scott, he'd still be up in Sechelt!

There is a price to pay for everything! :protest:

Good Grief

Postby blackdog » Sat Nov 17, 2007 9:38 am

This things you find once you start mining this site! I'm one of those guys that disposed of the old reels and carts and have nothing left except for one old grotty cassette circa 1981 from CKWL Williams Lake. And now I live in my 2 minutes of infamy on one of Scott's old airchecks. It's kinda creepy and kinda .... who knows. Of course I've listed to this aircheck for about 3 mintues now and haven't heard Scott....Geez Buddy, tighten up the editing!!!! Just kidding -- but talk about waybacking....

Black Dog

Postby Scott Russell » Sat Nov 17, 2007 11:49 am

Ahhh the old Black Mutt!!!!!

How's it going Doug. Doug and I , I believe hit most of the
1000 watt markets in our tour of B.C. and Western Canada.
in the 70's and 80's.
I think I still have some of your cutlery..from sharing
a hovel in Williams Lake in ...1980?????
Great to hear from you..and regarding the aircheck that
someone so graciously posted from Vernon(that was a
10,000 watter), I'm more than happy that I don't make
a cameo til much later in the tape. I think it had something
to do with the big sweep of records after Your 8am Major,
Sports , Easy Gardening Program with Ellwood Rice and the 8:15am Sunday Church Calendar Listings.

I'm thinking much of that programming didn't survive CJIB's
switch to Frequency Modulation. Ha..

CKWL Williams Lake Open Line

Postby Scott Russell » Sat Nov 17, 2007 7:26 pm

Russ,

FYI, and this must mean you and I have too much time on our hands,
but Doug left CKWL in 1980 BEFORE I left the mighty 570
(CKCQ Quesnel...and down the network at CKBX 100 Mile House)
The Cariboo Radio Network...

Anyway...I would go on later for a 2 dollar a month raise to
spin country tunes at CFFM 98 in Kamloops...But Doug had left before me,
so you did not work with him. And Russ, please tell us some
CFKC OR Kitimat voice track stories..!!!!

Now in the News 1130 Business Centre..Russell Bythe...

Dear Mr. vereck Verrechi
Hey Scott... Have you EVER seen an 'E' at the end of my last name.
I'd think living on an island, you wouldn't have time to scan the Internets on the weekend. (Private joke)
The only thing I ever voicetracked at CFKC was a pale rip-off I did of Dave McCormick's famed discumentary. (Sorry Pluto!) All the rest of the midday was live brother. Same with CKTK Kitimat.... did the morning show live out of the production studio in Terrace...the rest of the day was simulcast (that means the same feed on two or more stations at the same time)
I could have sworn I worked with Doug Blackie at some point. Was he maybe in Vernon during the SRN/SBN days? Perhaps we just talked on the phone about news. Hopefully Doug will get in on this and help out.

Sorry Russ, but with all due respect you can't spell my real name..haha
Yes Doug Blackie worked in Vernon with me. I was doing the prime time
Midnight to 6am slot. And if there is a god, he will enter this conversation.

And regarding your Kitimat days,
I should have known that ..given the fact I worked a day..well
a half day at CFTK Television in Terrace..but that's a story for
another day. Okay that's enough..Afterall we can pick up this
scintillating conversation at the mighty 2440 Ash..As for Creston,
I also worked witha Pete McIntyre who worked at CFKC (we broadcast Vernon Lakers games on CJIB a long time ago) Wow this is like one of those Kevin Bacon...degrees of separation things..Well maybe not.
If this doesnt get the kids excited about broadcasting..nothing will.

Okay I am out.

Note: I referred to CKWL as 1000 Watts, As you know Russ ,
the mighty 570 in the Central Cariboo was 250w at night.
Which was a pain for listeners in the Chilcotin who couldn't
listen to the 5pm message time broadcast

Hey guys ... I left CKWL in early 1981 (February) off to pursue all kinds of radio glory at CKOO in Osoyoos. I went with Trevor Stevens who's now the pizza king of Campbell River.

Not sure I ever worked with you Russ ... I think we talked a few times in the late 80s when you were at CRN and I was on my third (and last) tour of duty at CJIB.

Do recall those dark and cold days living in Otto's attic -- and the true joy of message time. I still have one of those broadcasts on cassette.

Can't say much of anything survives of the old CJIB. The new KISS FM (yawn) format is eminently forgettable drek :violent2: programmed most likely by some propellor head in Toronto and bears no real reflection of the local market. Kudos to Patrick though that he does a Saturday oldies and request show (somehwat under Roger's radar I bet) which still has some of that old CJIB flavour. Old Pistol Peter does his best on the news side of things but it's nothing like the "news machine" we had back in the day. I think I made my monthly car payment on those BN cheques!

The last real relic is John Mitsche's 1980 Plymouth Volare  tooling around Vernon still that sports remnants of the old CJIB sunburst. That and that fact that Frank Martina is still (back) on the air doing what he does best. But things change -- even HKV is under new ownership and a mere shadow of it's former self. Like they say - you can move back but you can't go back!

Must've been SRN then Doug as I arrived in the Cariboo just in time for the Stampede in '81. Thanks for clarifying!

Yup ... just a few short months. It was truly an amazing little market for a 20 year old fledgling broadcaster! If -40, living with Scott Russell and Message Time weren't enough -- we had the "candlelight and wine" music mandate for the noon hour as well! We regularly broke the rule until busted by the morality squad (CKCQ) who happening to be listening on cue the day we peeled out a major Fleetwood Mac guitar solo........

I hope Patrick still gives away a Cross Pen or a GC to the Intermezzo Restaurant.

Always loved the "police special" at HKV and a patty melt at that Restaurant next to Waddy's, after a night at the Lodge.
