Kingston Radio Station Stunts With 102.7 The Pole

Postby paterson » Wed Mar 01, 2023 10:24 am

The former KISS FM in Kingston Ontario is no more and currently stunting as 102.7 The Pole. For now, the station is playing the music heard in strip bars.
No word on what the actual format will eventually be, but there is some speculation of oldies or alternative. More from Broadcast Dialogue with a link to a unique radio

I'm betting it'll probably go alternative.

Alternative is what many are thinking or 80's/90's oldies. Jon Pole and Andrew Dickson are the new co-owners of The Pole (WLYK). These gentlemen founded MyFM, which is an independent broadcaster in Southern Ontario with about 20 stations usually in towns and smaller cities. The transmitter for WYLK is located in Cape Vincent NY, with studios and offices in Kingston.

If the station ultimately adopts either an oldies format or alternative, they don't need to play cancon since they are a US licensed station. MyFM does have one alternative station with FREQ FM out of Peterborough and they may be looking to expand this banner. Kingston would be a good choice for either alternative or 80's/90's music.

WYLK has been around in various forms and formats since 1989 and has had spotty performance over the years, even going bankrupt once. Since Kingston is on the Canada/US border the Kingston CMA (175,000 people) has a lot of local radio on both sides. A few of the US stations focus on Canada for advertising and WYLK has billed themselves as a Kingston station for years. Right now they are having fun with grinder tunes on The Pole. The new format will be introduced when they fix some technical issues and the change of ownership is approved by the FCC. WYLK sold for under $400,000 and this will be the first time that the station will not have American owners.
MyFM has a decent track record of running profitable small stations.
