As for the discussion about advertising, the simple answer always was, if it's illegal, it's illegal to advertise it.


That doesn't sound at all like entrapment. Entrapment involves inducing someone to commit a criminal offence. That merely sounds like a ruse to locate fugitives.

If you think it is entrapment please explain.

Maybe the marijuana folks are one of the few willing to buy time on the Old Dog?

A friend told me today that she never thought she'd prefer listening to NW rather than CBC, but loves Sundays with the Dog. As she explained, she can listen to Ted Talks and NPR all afternoon with no commercials.

That's a sad comment on the marketability of CKNW when it can run for hours with no ads.

VERY telling = re: no ads.

Notice as well - CKNW seems to overloaded with 'dollar a holler' spots from small time retailers. Where are all the Nationals?

The ratings are out Thursday and I had a pal in Toronto, who is in the know, and the feeling is extant that there will be deep changes if CKNW stiffs again.

Isn't NPR an acronym for No Profit Radio?

On the rare positive side, I thought Marcella Bernardo did a great job of filling in on the Sean Leslie Show this weekend.

Marcella not only has a news background, so she does a credible job of talking about the issues of the day, she handles her callers well and she has a sense of hunour.

I'd suggest NW consider her for the 6 to 10 PM slot which is currently lacking in all three areas that she shines in.

... given the Supreme Court's unanimous ruling this morning (June 11, 2015) that found the Harper Government's restrictions on medical marijuana are unconstitutional?

The ruling makes no difference in the overall context of the CKNW discussion. The Supreme Court ruling simply allows those who have legal dispensation to consume medical marijuana to ingest it in different forms, ie: cookies, oils, lozenges or even as lip balm. It just opens up the options for those who wish to use it as a treatment option (pain control, wasting diseases, nausea, etc) but don't want to smoke it. The ruling is especially beneficial for those dealing with lung cancer, COPD or other respiratory ailments, as taking a hit off a blunt may not be the best thing for them to do.

It does, however, bring up an intriguing solution for the problem that CKNW does not seem to know it has yet.

Were they to model their advertising after existing prescription medication advertising, they might bring themselves in-line with the Law and the Radio Regulations. I'm assuming here that Medical Marijuana is considered, in Canadian Law, a prescription medication like any other.

Still a non-starter Jon, thought the basis of your idea may be valid in the future, depending on which condition occurs first -- 1): pot is decriminalized, which would allow advertising as it would no longer violate rules of the Broadcasting Act (which states you are not allowed to advertise any item, product or service that is illegal). And 2): a medical dispensary (and/or manufacturer/distributor) is big enough to have a national presence (and a recognized brand line of standardized products) and is willing to take on the task of getting preclearance authorization from Health Canada in order to comply with the seemingly endless regulatory provisions surrounding health product advertising.

Once decriminalization happens (possibly as soon as when the Harper Government is removed from power), the second condition becomes moot. Advertising targeting the recreational users wouldn't need preclearance as the spots themselves probably wouldn't be touting health benefits (just give the address, business hours & if you offer home delivery), all while informing the medical users of where they can score.
