Worst CanCon of all time.

"Monday Morning Choo Choo" by The Stampeders. Makes me want to stand on the tracks until the train comes. Runner up. "Love Bandit" by the same group. Were they forced to record this stuff at gunpoint by the Cancon police?

Hi Everyone,
Yep would certainly agree with you on that one Tuned. I don't mind some of the Stampeder songs and like the fact they were from Calgary. However that Choo Choo song is something I am not even sure kids in a daycare would like!!! Speaking of the Stampeders does anyone know how many lps and 45 rpm records they released in total? I know I have at least one album and several 45s from them. I don't think I have the songs mentioned here unless they are on the album. Hope not!!!!

Take care everyone and good listening to you!

But they did have a few good ones too, like Ramona, and this one:

some of those FACTOR LP's that got sent to Canadian stations at the beginning of the 70's had some hideous shit on them. There's just too much bad CANCON for me to choose any one song... :canflag1:

I have not chatted with Ronnie King in 20 years... he was doing a gig at a night club with the drummer from Tull, in Calgary back then.... he could give you some answers etc. Anyone in Calgary know if Ronnie is still playing the scene ?

I have some long-time connections with some Calgary musicians who have connections with Barrie "Barriemore" Barlow of Tull. I'll make some inquiries.

Yup. SITS is on top of the garbage bin pile. And anything by Keith Barry.

Got a reply right away from my friends in Calgary.
Ronnie King is back with the reunited Stampeders (original trio of King, Kim Berly and Rich Dodson) and is frequently seen around Calgary although I don't know if that's home base for him or not.
They're just about set to resume touring again after wrapping up a whole summer's worth of gig's ending in Parry Sound a week ago. They start up again in Winnipeg on October 18th and will be back in Calgary at the Deerfoot Casino March 29th of next Spring.
That drummer he was playing club gigs with 20 years ago was, in fact, the guy I've just spoken with; long time Calgary musician Jim Llewellyn who toured with Tull in the 70's as drummer for Tull's opening act which was a Calgary - based band called Painter. I think that's where the confusion is, as Jim has had an on-going relationship, both professionally and personally, with Barriemore Barlow ever since.

That's Jim Llewellyn on the left...Barrie Barlow on the right from back-in-the-day.

I would have to say, that any song by Celine Dion,Haywire would qualify.
I actually like Monday Morning Choo Choo and Seasons In The Sun.
It would be nice if radio stations would expant there can con,so not to be repetitive.

And I highly doubt Choo Choo will EVER be a Can-Con 45 of the day here on RW!
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Thanks for the pic Neumann... no confusion...am a big fan of Tull... `thick as a brick' etc.

Good to hear that the band is touring... they have alot of fans... Sweet City Woman being another signature tune.

A couple years ago, I had the good fortune to meet up again with Ronnie King. This was at a surprise birthday party in Toronto for Scott Taylor - one of the gang at 66-CFR in the day. I asked him if he was jamming with any of the guys back in Calgary and he reminded me that he never jammed - he learned Stampeder songs... and that was it.

The bash was at a mutual friend's house and we were all huddled together waiting for the guest of honour to arrive. In the meantime Ronnie and I started lapsing into "old days" memories over some pops and there were a few moments of melancholy. That's when I leaned on his arm and said, "Well, Ronnie. We did make it to here - all the way to Todd's garage!" Many yuks followed.

Meanwhile, the recording of Sweet City Woman, to my mind, was an extremely gutsy call in terms of arrangement and production. It might still be courageous were it to be recorded today.
