Art Bell returning to the airwaves

Postby kal » Tue Jul 30, 2013 11:43 pm

Well, not so much airwaves as satellite "waves." Bell has had enough of his hiatus (he hasn't been heard on radio since Halloween 2010) and even though his work lives on in Coast to Coast AM he's made it clear that he's not happy with the show under George Noory. Bell resurfaces on the Sirius XM network September 16 with a daily show that will run 7pm to 10 pm PT, originating from his Pahrump NV home studios.

The long dormant artbell.com web site has also resurfaced in anticipation of the new show.

This will be interesting. George had big shoes to fill and it just didn't happen. In the last year or so, a number of big signal affiliates have dumped C2C and gone with Cumulus' Red Neck Radio,
which even features the old voice of C2C, Ross Mitchell from KKOH 780 in Reno.

I can see where Art is disappointed with what George has done to the show. It seems to be more about selling monthly/yearly subscriptions to the show's podcast business than anything. Many of
the guest that were regulars have slowly disappeared.

Rather than "Best Of's", I'd love to hear Rollye James on the nights Art's not there.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Add me to the list of Rollye James fans (dating back to her time at 85 KOA Denver in the '80s).

Rollye has an almost photographic memory of Top 40 radio, the jocks and the hits (and not so big hits). If you ever read a mid to late 1960's Billboard Magazine, along with Claude hall's Vox Jox
column was material written by Rollye Borenstein. Guess who??

The next time I heard her name was in credits on Watermark's "Soundtrack Of The 60's" syndicated radio show.

The first time I heard her on radio was also on KOA when i lived in Calgary in the 1980s. When I came back to Vancouver in 1992, she was part of the lineup on 1090 KING in it's talk show era.
In the later 90's she was doing fill in work on C2C.

I think over the years she drove every mile of every interstate highway in the USA. She remembered what was at every exit of every highway!

A few years ago she was doing an internet radio show that I think might have been picked up by XM or Sirius.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Greetings,
I agree with you RadioFan. I really like Rollye too and she has driven all those interstate highways. I believe she is a amateur radio operator as well as a real big record collector fan too! Has talked about great vintage oldies in the Philly area. She calls her show the Lunatic Fringe sometimes and although I do not always agree with her political viewpoint I love listening to her. She is a great radio broadcaster. I liked it when she filled in for Art Bell years ago too. Unlike a lot of superficial talk show hosts Rollye puts some real heart and soul into her show!!!

Take care everyone,

73s Eldon

CFAC Radio Calgary, during its country music heyday, left a favourable impression on Rollye. I remember her making comments about the station to a caller during her time in Denver.

Another memorable exchange was with a caller remarking about her attractiveness after seeing her on television during a report on one of her charitable acts in the mile high city. She handled the compliments with class.

I used to hear Art Bell on the ham bands from time to time, buthave so far been unable to work him because whenever he is on-air he is swamped with stations calling him. He is (or was) a very active ham radio operator known as W6OBB, and is just generally a fellow "crazy about radio guy," as many of us are.

Here's a look at his station and website ......

http://www.smeter.net/pahrump/art-bell.php

Art Bell also owned a stand-alone FM station, KNYE .... which he sold in May 2008. http://www.knye.com/pahrumpradioinc_009.htm

Art used to get into some super-weird topics, but like watching a slow motion video of a fatal train wreck, I often couldn't tune off frequency. He did well in promoting his all-night slot show and getting into syndication ...... certainly something few of us have been able to do.

Another exceptionally talented radio guy, Phil Hendrie has done numerous parodies of Art Bell's shows ....... well worth the listen ..... get set for a laugh or two. Bear in mind that Phil Hendrie does all of these voices and ad lib content live, in real time.

Here's Art Bell's response to Phil Hendrie's parodies .... http://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum ... 971107/pg1

Hendrie is a scream .... look him up on youtube ....

Regards to all,
AWG

Greetings,

Yes Art is a very talented guy in radio. He started KNYE FM 95.1 in Pahrump, Nevada, later selling it to his lady manager who I believe currently owns it. They play a lot of local programming and have oldies as their main format. I am currently listening to it on one of my wi-fi internet radios, they stream on the net... I have heard Art's voice with time and temperature announcements so think he is still helping KNYE out when in Pahrump which I believe he is living right now. I think he moved back to Pahrump from the Phillipinnes where he was living several years ago. Pahrump, Nevada was his home base. Right now KNYE has George Noory on Coast to Coast AM late at night as far as I know, the rest of the time they are local and real community oriented with remotes and local programming! It would not surprise me that Art has his show when it begins again on KNYE FM replacing Coast to Coast AM. Apparently he is not too pleased with the way George Noory has been doing Coast to Coast AM. I have a photo of Art in his amateur radio room on my Facebook page, impressive equipment too!!!

Take care everyone, all the best to you , safety first,

73s Eldon

Why does Eldon's safety first campaign always remind me of this immortal movie scene:

Hey, there's a subject for Art Bell: body armour.

Phil Hendrie doing Art Bell was classic....just as funny when he does Tom Leykis. Art doesn't have a problem with Phil's schtick but apparently Leykis doesn't...
