Stoopid Question, Maybe?

Postby CKOK Rock Jock » Tue Mar 19, 2013 4:34 pm

I have tried to locate online (more than once) an actual listing of current, reserved and recycled Canadian Radio/TV call signs.

Any idea where I can find something that's actually up-to-date?

Also, I have tried to locate online a listing of current AM/FM/Community Radio station listings for Canada.

Unless I'm not looking at the right places I keep finding pretty outdated information.

I do follow the CRTC Public Notices/Decisions site with some regularity but they don't seem to have what I'm looking for.

Thanks!

Greetings,
Hi CKOK Rock Jock, George! I think I might be able to help you to find current listings. Not sure about outdated call letters and I guess it depends how far back you want to go, the 20s, 30s???? However if you want to see a fairly accurate listing of all AM, FM, and community radio stations licensed in Canada just go to wikipedia and type in list of (name province, British Columbia, Alberta etc.) radio stations and you will get the complete list for that province you asked for. Now it will also show a lot of the rebroadcasting stations including some CBC ones on AM and FM. Quite helpful and I have been using this for at least 3 years now! It will not separate AM and FM stations but includes them all together by location, calls or I think frequency whatever you choose to put them in alphabetically or numerically. It also indicates who owns the station as well. You should find it useful!

Take care everyone, 73s Eldon

Eldon...I actually thought that you would be 'the guy' to ask about this once I posted my question here.

Thanks for the tip!

scroll down to "Available Call-sign List" and there is both a downloadable pdf file or viewable HTML file. Good luck with your new Internet station. As a 9 year veteran of "hobby' webcasting, I too beleive that online radio will get it's day

If you're looking for older info, a great site is David Gleason's http://www.americanradiohistory.com/ . He has PDF files of old White's Radio Log, Vane Jones books, Broadcasting Magazine and Yearbooks
and tons of other great info. One of the best radio history resources on the net.

Actually I DON'T have an internet radio station. I own and operate a weekly community newspaper.

Hi Everyone,
Looks like a lot of info. about call letters and historical info. for you rock jock! Thanks Sky Valley for putting the link to Industry Canada calls etc.. good stuff! Also welcome aboard Radio West Rocky from Didsbury, Alberta. You are absolutely correct, that site you mentioned with old broadcasting yearbooks, whites radio log etc. is excellent for doing historical research on radio in North America (USA and Canada), great stuff, I have checked it out myself in the past year or two and like it! Just curious Rocky but are you a radio broadcaster, dxer etc..??? Quite a few dxers know about the site of which i am one among other things! Again welcome to Radio West! By the way folks CKOK Rock Jock is a former radio broadcaster and does an excellent job of owning and operating a local community newspaper! Wish he owned a local station as I think he would do a great job of operating an independent local radio station as well!

Take care everyone, 73s Eldon

Thanks, Gerry! Nice of you to say. I really enjoyed my time as Assistant Manager at CKRP/CIOR in Princeton before Okanagan Skeena Group took over and turned it into a full-time repeater stick in April 1999. I think all the 'extra' job duties prepared me for what I am doing now and I credit Okanagan Radio and Princeton Broadcasting for all of that. Those were good times and a fun 'era' to be in Radio.

Oh, and Eldon...thanks for your kind words! Being an independent weekly community newspaper owner in BC is challenging as we are one of just a handful of indies left. I like being to small voice in the wilderness that isn't controlled by a corporate office headquartered in some other big city. For example, I've been blasting our local Town Council in the past couple issues for trying to implement (in my view) stupid parking regulations in our town of 2,000 residents. They had so much negative feedback that they are 'revisiting' the issue and I think my paper had something to do with that. I like that sort of thing.

Hey i was at the other end of the highway! CKGO Hope for about a year. Those small stations were a blast, and a great place for young guys to learn the ropes. I think I did everything while I was there, hosting a show, promotions, copy.... buying the coffee....

Hi Everyone,
Yes interesting stuff, CKOK Rock Jock (George) you do a good job of owning the local newspaper there. It sounds like a good paper, I am planning on taking out a subscription to it when I get a chance. One thing George did you own part of the Princeton Radio station when you worked there??? I had subscribed to the Hope Standard Newspaper way back in the 70s to early 80s for about 10 years. Always liked Hope and Princeton area. At one time I thought of starting an FM station in Hope and had done a lot of the research and paperwork for it way back in the late 70s and early 80s. However i did visit CKGO quite a few times and a radio friend from KVRE 1460 Santa Rosa came up to see me in the 70s. We visited and toured CKGO and really enjoyed seeing the station. I think Peter Slack was the manager or working there at the time but there were a couple others who were quite helpful too. I know Alan and I enjoyed the visit a lot. Oh almost forgot I think if my memory is not playing games on me RadioFan came along on one of the trips to CKGO too! Anyhow I was wondering what years you worked at CKGO Fillinguy??? The times I visited CKGO would have been between 1972 and perhaps 1982 or 83.

Oh before I forget HOPE YOU ARE ALL HAVING A GREAT EASTER WEEKEND!!!! HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!!!!

Just after I left Eldon's CFAY in Surrey when he operated with 5 watts into a long wire on 1357.25 KHz, he was reviewing the CRTC forms and paperwork required to get a station in Manning Park.

Given the lack of FM radios in cars at the time (1969 or 1970), the major money hurdle was the cost of the engineering study required for any AM station at the time, even a non-directional graveyarder.

Greetings,
That is so true Jon, thanks for verifying that. Yes we were thinking of doing a Campground Radio Tourist information and music station for Manning Park with low power AM although FM came into mind too. The idea was to have a Summer or Good Weather station on location in the park with main studios in Hope, B.C. Later on I looked at the FM Band. Had several people working in radio in the USA that were considering getting involved and moving up to Canada at the time. It never went forward though because of initial financial costs and we did want to obtain a license so that would have added to cost at the time especially consultant engineering costs. I had looked at Part 15 operation too but thought it would be too limited for that mountain terrain! Anyway I still have all the information in Langley in storage. With Rogers putting the AM stations on FM in Chilliwack and Hope and practically no local programming from what used to be CKGO 1240 Hope anymore I think someone might apply for a low power FM community station there eventually. Never know some brave soul might even apply for a low power commercial community station. I would like to see smaller towns like Hope and Princeton get local radio again. If places like Salmo and Lillooet can get low power FM stations there is no reason that Hope and Princeton could not even though they are not that large population base! I was quite surprised when Salmo, B.C. got their low power community FM station a few years ago. I have been through Salmo which is a fair distance south of Nelson, its not very big at all! Kind of a Blink and you miss it sort of thing! Perhaps it has grown more in the past 10 years though.

Take care everyone, thanks Jon for pointing that out! I think we had several conversations about all that on the phone way back in the early 70s too as I recall. I believe I also mentioned it quite a few times to ve7rox and radiofan as well but that is many moons ago!!!

Hope everyone is having a nice Easter Weekend. I know I am, I just won some good money on Ontario-49 Saturday night, March 30th, 2013! Its the best lottery to play in Canada because its the cheapest at only 50 cents a ticket!!! Makes your odds of winning a lot better for playing a lot of your own numbers, not dumb quick picks!!! Although in defense of that I just read of a lady who bought a Quick Pick (only one on Lotto 649 in Hamilton, Ontario, shes a lifelong resident) and won 30 Million Dollars March 2, 2013!!! For any of you Ontario Radio West members that play lotteries the ticket was bought at Big Bear Food Mart on Limeridge Road in Hamilton, Ontario. I have often found and believed that being at the right place (namely the lucky retail location) at the right time was the key to winning big, I still think that! It also helps to have a positive attitude and not be a negative stick in the mud!!!! Well I know all this is getting sidetracked away from the main thread topic but just thought I would add a bit of Easter Cheer Financial Inspiration to this thread. Hey maybe you can win if you buy a lottery ticket Easter Weekend!!!

Take care everyone, safety first! 73s Eldon

Greetings,
I just remembered that I had numerous discussions about the Campground Radio Station idea with the late Brain Williams who was an avid dxer and good radio friend in Vancouver. Dan, Jon, RadioFan and others knew him well. Brian offered a lot of positive suggestions about it and was interested in participating if we could get the license. Thats one thing about Brian Williams he was a great guy and quite a positive person. Dan can certainly verify that. I think Brian passed away before Radio West really got going. If he had been a member I am sure he would have had some great postings on here!!! For those who did not know Brian was also one of the former CFAY DJs, there are several photos of him going back to about 1969 on the cfay website for anyone interested.
