North Battleford (CJME) - Funeral services will be held Friday for a prominent Battlefords citizen and one of Canada's pioneering women in broadcasting.

Christine Dekker died Friday night after briefly battling cancer. She was 82.

Dekker was a member of the Half-Century Club of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters, having started in 1950 as a receptionist at CFQC in Saskatoon.

She met her husband Harry Dekker there, and together they co-hosted the Double Dekker Breakfast Club, Saskatchewan's most popular radio show at the time.

In 1954 the show, and the Dekkers, moved to CJNB in the Battlefords, and the program continues to this day, hosted by their son Harry Michael.

Christine supported virtually every cause in the Battlefords, including membership in Beta Sigma Phi and the city's Diamond Jubilee Committee. She played a role in establishing the North Battleford branch of the Western Development Museum.

Harry and Christine's community work is being celebrated with the establishment of the Dekker Centre for the Performing Arts, which will open next year in the Battlefords. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 o'clock Friday at Third Avenue United Church in North Battleford.
