Monday brings a big change for the CKWX brand, with a fresh rebrand aimed at reinforcing our commitment to you, our audience.

Starting July 29, CityNews 1130 will be 1130 NewsRadio Vancouver. While our name and colours might be slightly different, our promise to deliver quality, accurate, and local breaking news, traffic, and weather remains the same.

1130 NewsRadio is Vancouver’s trusted news station. The more you listen, the more you’ll know.

Listen for Traffic and Weather, together every 10 minutes on the ones, as well as Traffic Alerts in between when things happen. We also have your Breaking News covered on-air and online, with breaking news alerts sent directly to your inbox.

You can still catch us on 1130 AM radio, online at vancouver.citynews.ca, and on all your streaming devices.

CFFR-660 Calgary has also switched to 660 NewsRadio Calgary branding. Likewise, CFTR-680 Toronto.

As did CJNI 95.7 in Halifax and CKGL 570 in Kitchener. Flagship station CFTR 680 in Toronto made the switch on March 27th of this year.

I hear the word Newsradio and I think of the misfits on the sitcom that ran the fictional NYC station WNYX. Bravo Rogers at the rebranding

I listened online this morning and it appears Vancouver has dropped that gawdawful talk show out of Ottawa.

Was this part of the branding change or did they do this when AM 730 shut down so they could have traffic on the ones?

660 in Calgary had the show on this morning even though the programming bar showed the regular newswheel features.

Maybe they'll ditch the evening and overnight simulcast.

To Howaboutthat...
my thought exactly about "ya that'll help".
Plus... just like NW doesn't do...HIRE COMPETENT READERS! Pathetic lack of talent on the air these days.

Re: talent or lack thereof. IF performers go to a broadcast school, upon completion they head straight to the expensive microphones in a big city. NOT to a single station market where they can learn everything from how to turn the transmitter on and off, set levels in the NR and the booth AND make coffee. Spend a year or two polishing their trade and then send out some audition material (thumb drive). Do everything on that sample, not just what they want to do full-time.

As for the new station, I.D., I can't help but remember the old Newsradio, a National outlet, based in Toronto, that serviced many privately owned stations across the country with copy, voicers and hourly 'casts. They provided competition to Broadcast News for a time until they ran out of gas ($$$).

The times they have changed. With apologies to Bob Dylan.

Pronounciations, as per this discussion board, a huge turnoff. (I agree)

Heard the evening newsperson last night on the first night of the all-new1130 NewsRadio pronounce E. coli as e-coley.

I guess bacteria isn't in the broadcast school curriculum???

Seeing this discussion about rank amateur on-air staff reminds of something I saw back in 1964 or '65.
I had just started in radio at a small station (CKAY, Duncan, BC) just as it was about to go on the air.
I was looking at the manager's copy of Canadian Broadcaster magazine and read an interesting letter to the editor in which the writer, obviously someone with many years in the business, complained about the three-year "veterans" who thought they knew everything there was to know about radio.
It made a distinct impression on me!
Some of today's "newbies" need to spend several years working in the boonies!

While we’re on the major market news discussion, switching over to Global at 6, how about Sofi starring in a commercial during the show promoting the never ending pride celebrations? Complete with a charming drag dude.

I don't have an issue with Sof doing the promo, but I think the placement should be out of the Newshour. As far as I know, it's a freebie and not a paid-for spot so it can run anywhere.

As for pronunciation, out-of-towners struggle with local place names but research is the key. If you didn't get it done before you hit the mic switch to "on," look it up or ask a co-worker or two. It will do you nothing but good!

I remember the CKO days in VAN. Was any history written about that venture? Just kind of withered away.

Wikipedia has a pretty decent historical write up about CKO:

in reference to the switch to discussing CKO ...
At BN Toronto, we referred to CKO as CK-zero ...
