VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Long-time listeners of NEWS 1130 will know Richard Dettman’s calm and collected voice.

They’ve heard him on the air every :26 and :56 past the hour — as well as in between — for years. But the time has come, and Richard has decided to hang up his headphones.

Throughout his 45-year career in the broadcast industry, Richard has made a mark on radio audiences in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley as one of the most trusted names in business journalism.

Richard’s passion for storytelling is known well by NEWS 1130 listeners, who have benefitted from his ability to take complex business stories and lift them off the page.

Richard joined NEWS 1130 in 2004 and has helped make this radio station Vancouver’s go-to radio source for the latest business news.

However, he did not spend his entire journalism career covering the business world. Prior to joining Rogers Media, his career took him to CKO, CJOR, CKVU-TV, and CFVR Abbotsford, where he wore many hats including anchor, news director, talk show host, and editorialist.

Among his long list of accomplishments, Richard expertly led coverage of the financial crisis in 2008, and recently has kept listeners informed of the economic impact of the current COVID-19 pandemic. He has covered many court cases and inquests, and even helped expose a group pushing anti-Semitism in the Fraser Valley.

When asked to reflect on the best part of his career in news, however, Richard said, without hesitation, that it was his colleagues.

“There are few things more rewarding than working for the public good while having the time of your life with smart, motivated and hilarious colleagues,” Richard says.

While he won’t be on the NEWS 1130 airwaves as a regular once he begins his retirement, this isn’t goodbye. Richard will continue to contribute to special projects with us, so stay tuned.

You can catch Richard’s last business report live on-air on Nov. 27.

Richard will be missed by his colleagues and his many listeners. We wish him all the best of luck.
