New CKNW Lineup Announced

Postby radiofan » Thu Mar 26, 2020 1:38 pm

Following the recent appointment of Simi Sara as new morning show host on the station, 980 CKNW is proud to announce Mike Smyth and Jill Bennett as new hosts to round out the refreshed schedule. The new shows officially launch on March 30.

In order to facilitate an additional show, as Sara moves from midday to mornings, 980 CKNW is shortening the length of its show times to create space for a fourth daytime talk show. After Mornings with Simi, The Mike Smyth Show will air from 9 a.m. to noon, and will be hosted by the longtime columnist at The Province. After 24 years with the outlet, Smyth joins Corus Entertainment full-time, as both a columnist for GlobalNews.ca and a CKNW host. His show will broadcast from the BC Legislature, joining forces with Keith Baldrey and Richard Zussman, to form a powerhouse Victoria bureau for Global News and CKNW.

Former CKNW weekend host and Global BC reporter Jill Bennett will host The Jill Bennett Show from noon to 3 p.m. each weekday.

As a regular guest and host for more than 20 years, Mike Smyth is already a familiar voice to 980 CKNW listeners. His start in radio saw him analyzing provincial politics and verbally jousting with legendary hosts Frosty Forst, Philip Till and Jon McComb. In 2010 and 2011, Smyth hosted The Mike Smyth Show, stepping in after regular host Christy Clark returned to politics. He also hosted weekends and overnights before landing his own show, Nightline BC, the top overnight talk show from 2004 to 2007.

Smyth is an accomplished journalist. He was a reporter at The Canadian Press, Canada’s national news agency, for eight years and later became CP’s legislature correspondent in Victoria. In 1996, he was appointed as The Province’s political columnist.

Jill Bennett is an award winning broadcaster who has been working in the Vancouver market since 1997. She has worked as both a radio and television news reporter. For the past 11 years, Bennett has hosted CKNW's Weekend Morning News on Saturday and Sunday.

She is a winner of a Jack Webster award, as well as an RTDNA award for best radio editorial. During her career, Jill has traveled to Indonesia on a Journalism grant to cover the rebuilding following the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami and to Africa to teach Journalism at the National University of Rwanda.

Great to see that Mike Smyth will be in the 9 a.m. to noon time slot.

Now if they will get rid of some of the fluff content (contests, silly banter with producers, etc.) and let Mike stick to hard-hitting interviews and engaging conversation with callers, then it will be a great show.
